Water Beach Watchers Happenings for June 2008

Crab Pot Release Cord Training

Finally, the date is set! Friday, June 27th, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. We will be training at the at the Jamestown Tribal Center and can carpool from WSU. Water Beach Watchers in all the counties of Norther Puget Sound will be out on docks opening weekend to make this effort work. We are the only group in Jefferson County that is getting the message out, so please consider this short but relevant opportunity. Nearly 327,000 crabs die in lost pots each year in the Northwest Straits. Help reduce the needless waste of one of sounds most amazing gifts. Watch the video clip from KOMO news of divers removing crabpots in Puget Sound. http://www.komonews.com/news/local/18751314.html

You can help in LOTS of ways:
  • Helping assemble the public outreach info by cutting cord into 1 foot lengths and attaching it to the information cards.
  • Distributing cards at public and private launching sites during the opening days of the season this year: July 2,3,4,5 at Kala Point, Port Ludlow, Point Hudson, The Boat Haven, launches on Hood Canal.
  • Helping survey the public about their crabbing "habits"
  • Approaching Swains and other sporting stores and asking them to help get the word out.
  • Research on derelict gear in Jefferson County.
  • Wearing a totally cute crab hat at the docks to get people's attention.
Call to reserve a spot in the training 379-5610x230.

4000 dogs in Jefferson County
= 3000 pounds of poop a day!

We need dog owners to join this campaign to keep pet wastes out of Jefferson County stromwater. This is the perfect project for Water Beach Watchers who own dogs and are tired of seeing "deposits" on or near the waterways of our county. A pet waste brochure/bookmark has been created. We need help distributing it. Please call Jadyne for more details.

Spartina Kayak Survey Program

Got a kayak? Want to help reduce a nearshore invasive while you are out in your boat? People For Puget Sound is sponsoring a Community Spartina Education and Stewardship Program. They are interested in finding people along Jefferson County Shorelines who will spend time on the water finding Spartina. Please call me 379-5610x230 if this is of interest to you and I will contact the agency to coordinate training.

Chimacum Beach Transect Profiles

It has been over two years since the beach restoration project was done at Chimacum Beach in Irondale, at the foot of Moore Street. NOSC is getting ready to conduct their summer 'Beach Profiles' which help them track the changes in the beach topography as a result of the restoration project. With three years of winter storms and wave action, they expect to see some big changes between last year's data and this year.

Work involves note-taking, taking measurements with a stadia rod (like surveyors use), taking photos and helping to set out long measuring tapes. There will be lots of walking, but otherwise it is not strenuous work. They need up to 4 helpers each day on June 30th and
July 1,2,3 from 9am to 3:30. You can sign up for full or half days. RSVP to Owen at restoration@nosc.org
